Rainwater Tanks
Click through the topics below to learn more about your water:
Rainwater tanks are an excellent way to conserve water, lower your utility bills, and support sustainable water usage. Whether you live in a rural area or an urban neighbourhood, installing a rainwater tank allows you to collect and use rainwater for various purposes, such as flushing toilets, washing clothes, and watering your garden.
Using rainwater in your home
Rainwater can be safely used for gardens, car washing, and even in toilets and washing machines when properly connected.
Rural properties often rely on rainwater as their primary water source, while urban residents use it to supplement town water supplies.
Installation and approval
Council Requirements: Installing a rainwater tank may require Council approval or a compliance certificate, particularly if:
- Earthworks, retaining walls, or support structures are needed.
- The tank is located near property boundaries (must be at least 500mm away) or over a septic system or pit.
Plumbing: All tank drain connections must be installed by a licensed plumber, who will issue a Plumbing Certificate upon completion.
For specific requirements, contact Council’s Planning and Environmental Health Division on 1300 864 444.
Rebates and savings
Rous County Council, the bulk water supplier for Ballina Shire, offers rebates to residential town water customers who install rainwater tanks or recycled water systems. This program can significantly reduce your installation costs.
