Pressure Sewer Systems

A pressure sewer system consists of an underground collection chamber and pump unit that grinds and pumps sewage under pressure into Ballina Shire Council’s sewerage network. These systems are an alternative to conventional gravity sewers, often used in areas where they provide a more effective solution.

How It Works

  • The tank stores up to 112 litres under normal conditions and is pumped down to 80 litres.
  • In case of a fault, the tank can store up to 720 litres, providing around 2 days of capacity under typical water usage.
  • The system connects to your household’s electricity supply and features a control panel with audible and visible alarms to signal any issues.
  • Pump stations on properties are linked via a network of pressurised pipelines that transfer sewage to a discharge point in the Council’s sewerage system.

Responsibilities

Council’s Responsibilities

Ballina Shire Council is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and replacement of:

  • The pump station and its connections.
  • The property discharge line and associated fittings.
  • The boundary assembly and collection pipelines.

Council staff will carry photographic ID for all site visits. If unverified individuals request access, do not allow it and contact Ballina Shire Council.

Note: Council only maintains pumpstations where there’s a signed maintenance agreement between Council and the property owner.

Property Owner’s Responsibilities

Owners are responsible for:

  • Maintaining the electrical connection to the pump station.
  • Ensuring internal plumbing is connected correctly to the pump well. Stormwater must not be connected to the sewer system.
  • Paying annual sewer charges.
  • Providing tenants with an information manual (copies available from Council).

Resident’s Responsibilities

Residents must:

  • Provide electricity for the pump station and pay associated costs.
  • Allow Council access for maintenance or replacement of the sewer infrastructure.
  • Report alarms or issues to Council immediately.
  • Avoid flushing inappropriate materials (e.g. stormwater, oils, wipes).
  • Maintain clear access to the pump station and discharge lines.
  • Turn off power to the pump station during emergencies but not during regular power shut-offs.

Contact Council immediately on 1300 864 444 if your system generates alarms or exhibits performance issues.
