Active Ageing Plan

Ballina Shire’s population, like much of Australia’s, is changing; our population is getting older. The ageing of the population is a positive social trend and it is an indication that we are living longer, healthier lives.

Research tell us that issues such as social isolation and lack of physical activity have an adverse impact on an individual’s overall health and, if not addressed, can cause people to develop a range of illnesses that affect their physical and mental wellbeing.

Ballina Shire Council has developed an Active Ageing Plan to help recognise what is needed to prepare for an ageing population. This document was developed with input and consultation with services associated with older people, local residents and key stakeholders.

Council supports a range of programs that help improve the quality of life for our older residents and visitors, including:

  • Seniors Week activities
  • Ballina Shire Senior Citizen of the Year award
  • Support and activities for seniors.

  • Council on the Ageing (COTA) NSW is the peak organisation for people over 50 in New South Wales. They work with government and the private sector to bring about a fairer NSW. They also have reliable and up-to-date information on a wide range of topics that matter to people aged 50-plus.
