Council's Animal Shelter cares for and rehomes lost and abandoned dogs and cats. The shelter is not permanently staffed and an appointment must be made with the Rangers for collection and release of animals from the shelter.

Council Rangers make every attempt to re-home animals that have a friendly nature and suitable disposition for settling into a new home. To view animals that are available for rehoming please visit Northern Rivers Animal Services (NRAS) website or phone 6681 1860.

Report a Missing Pet

If you have lost your pet, contact Council by phone or complete the online missing pet form. Contact local vet clinics as people often drop off found or injured animals to their local vet. They may also take stray animals there to have them scanned for a microchip. Many local radio stations also provide a free 'lost and found' announcement on air.

If you have still not located your pet, gather up as many family and friends as you can and go for a walk around the neighborhood. Carry out a door knock and ask if your pet has been sighted in the area. Be prepared to walk a reasonable distance as even the smallest of dogs can cover a lot of ground, particularly if they have been frightened or spooked by fireworks or a storm. Remember to call your pets name while you look.

Ask permission of local shop owners and put up photographs and posters of your missing animal. If you live close to one of the neighbouring them to see if your pet has been handed into them.

Impounded Animals

Owners are responsible for their animal in relation to the Companion Animals Act and Companion Animals Regulation and may be liable for any breaches that may have occurred in relation to the Act.
