Introducing Ballina Shire's Australia Day Ambassador

Ballina Shire Council is excited to announce Liz Ellis will be Ballina Shire’s 2020 Australia Day special guest.

Liz Ellis is an elite athlete and regarded as Australia’s most successful netballer with an 18-year career at a national and international level. Liz was captain of the Australian Diamonds Netball Team and the Sydney Swifts, and surpassed the record for most test matches played for Australia. Her string of successes includes playing a record 122 times for her country, winning three World Championships, two Commonwealth Games gold medals and several other top honours.

In 2009 Liz became a Member of the Order of Australia for, ‘services to netball and the encouragement of women in sport.’

In 2018, Ellis received an Officer of the Order of Australia award for her ‘distinguished service to netball as an elite player and coach, through support and advocacy for young women, as a contributor to the broadcast and print media industries, and to the community’.

Liz is also a sports and current affairs commentator, author and mother. She resides in the Ballina Shire and we are very pleased to have Liz as our special guest for the 2020 Australia Day Celebrations.

“We are delighted to have Liz as our special guest on Australia Day, I can’t think of a more high calibre, fitting person to have at our new Ballina Indoor Sports Centre,” said Ballina Shire Council Mayor David Wright.

The Australia Day ceremony will commence at 9am on Sunday 26 January 2020 in the Ballina Indoor Sports Centre (BISC). Liz will be providing a special address as part of the ceremony as well as assisting with the Australia Day Awards and the citizenship ceremony.

All members of the community are warmly invited to attend the ceremony and official proceedings.
