Kerr Street traffic flow set to improve

Ballina Shire Council is duplicating Ballina’s Kerr Street (between River Street and Bentinck Street). The upgrade will improve traffic flow and future-proof the local road network.

Council will start construction on Monday 7 November 2022 and is expected to continue until the end of January 2023, weather permitting.

Following this, Council will begin upgrading the Kerr Street and Bentinck Street intersection, which includes the installation of new traffic lights. This stage of works will be completed in mid-2023.

“Kerr Street is an arterial road with an average daily traffic volume of almost 18,000 vehicles so it’s important we improve its safety and capacity for our community. Once duplicated, this section of road will complete the ‘missing link’ on Kerr Street and provide dual lanes from Tamarind Drive to River Street,” said Ballina Shire Council, Manager Project Management Office Mr Brett Dyki.

“The project’s design plans were finalised following the community’s feedback and feature a range of benefits for local traffic flow, pedestrian accessibility and meeting future traffic volumes,” added Mr Dyki.

Duplicating Kerr Street will improve traffic flow to meet current and future traffic volumes and decrease travel times. The upgrade will also improve motorist safety and pedestrian accessibility.

During construction speed limits will be reduced, traffic control will be in place and work hours will be from 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Every effort will be made to maintain resident access, although, at times, access may be altered or unavailable for short periods. Council’s contractor will communicate directly with impacted property owners.

The Kerr Street and Bentinck Street intersection upgrade has been funded through the NSW Government’s Safer Road program, which targets section of roads or intersections with a high accident record.

The lane duplication from Bentinck St to the existing dual lanes has been fully funded by Council.

For more information and to register for project updates visit ballina.nsw.gov.au/KerrStreetUpgrade.
