Recycled Water

Recycled water plays a key role in our Ballina Shire urban water cycle. Recycled water is water that originated as wastewater from toilets, showers, kitchens and laundries. The water has been treated to a high standard at a wastewater treatment plant to remove impurities and is now able to be reused by an increasing number of homes and businesses in the Ballina Shire.

You can't drink this recycled water but it is a great resource because it can be used for flushing toilets, washing clothes, washing cars, pathways and pets, for watering gardens including edible crops and for irrigation, business and industry.

And what's more, it's a drought-proof source, so you can use it to water your garden or wash your car even when we are in drought.

Over the next decade over 7,200 homes in the shire will be connected to dual reticulation. Each home will have two sets of water pipes: blue for drinking water and purple for recycled water. Homes with dual reticulation will reduce their use of drinking water by up to 40% .

Treatment

Recycled water is currently treated at our Lennox Head Wastewater Treatment facility. Our water recycling plant produces high quality recycled water that goes through a number of rigorous treatment processes in accordance with the Australian Guidelines for Water Recycling and the NSW DPI Water Guidelines for Recycled Water Management Systems. Our recycled water is treated to a drinking water quality standard and is crystal clear.

Properties with recycled water are audited when they are first built and then every five years to ensure no plumbing cross connections have occurred. Recycled water users can check their property’s last audit date via the recycled water sticker located within their meter/power box. See the treatment and auditing factsheets below for more information.

FAQs

Can you drink recycled water?

No. Recycled water should not be used for:

  • drinking
  • cooking or use in the kitchen
  • baths, showers, hand basins or personal washing
  • swimming pools
  • recreational water activities (eg playing under the sprinkler)
  • rainwater tanks

Does my property have recycled water?

Recycled water comes from easily distinguishable purple-coloured pipes connected to some of the taps and fittings in your home, such as toilets, laundry and garden taps.  If you have these purple-coloured taps and fittings, then you are receiving recycled water.

If you don’t have these fittings, but live in one of the supply areas, you may still be eligible by retrofitting your property with the necessary dual reticulation pipes and fittings.

If you are still unsure, contact Council on 1300 864 444

What if I accidentally drink recycled water?

All customers who have recycled water on their properties should have purple-coloured taps in order to distinguish recycled water from drinking water. Recycled water is highly treated and suitable for a range of uses.

It is not recommended for drinking, bathing and cooking but should you accidentally use recycled water in this way, it is unlikely you will fall ill. It is recommended however that you seek medical advice and inform Ballina Shire Council.

Is it safe for my pets to drink recycled water?

Yes it is safe for pets such as dogs and cats. Just change the water regularly as you would with any water you provide for pets.

Is it safe for children to come into contact with recycled water?

Yes, it is safe for children to come into direct contact with the recycled water, however, water toys and playing under sprinklers is not considered acceptable as children can swallow water during these activities.

Can I water my vegetable garden with recycled water?

Yes you can. It is safe to handle and eat vegetables that have been grown with recycled water. As a normal hygiene practice it is recommended that all vegetables be washed with drinking water before eating them.

What is dual reticulation?

Dual reticulation refers to properties which are supplied or have access to both standard drinking water and recycled water. ‘Dual’ means ‘two parts’ and ‘reticulation’ means a ‘system of pipes’. Recycled water is delivered through purple-coloured pipes and taps.
