Kingsford Smith Reserve Master Plan

Kingsford Smith Reserve is one of Ballina’s major sporting and recreation precincts. It includes:

• Kingsford Smith Park
• Commemoration Park 
• Missingham Park.

Some of the facilities in Kingsford Smith Reserve are ageing and need to be replaced or renovated to bring them up to current accessibility or inclusivity standards and to better match community needs. 

Ballina Shire Council has received $3.6 million in funding as part of an election commitment from The Hon. Ben Franklin and the NSW Office of Sport to upgrade some facilities at Kingsford Smith Park to meet the requirements of a regional sporting facility.

To ensure that the funded upgrades address the needs of stakeholders and are consistent with a long-term community vision for the broader precinct Council engaged a consultant, Urbis, to prepare a Master Plan for the Reserve.  This Master Plan outlines the vision for Kingsford Smith Reserve: "The recreational heart of the Ballina Region, where the community comes together to meet and play by the river".

The Kingsford Smith Reserve Master Plan was adopted on 28 October 2021.

The first stage of works in Kingsford Smith Park, funded by the NSW Office of Sport, are underway.

New netball courts have been constructed and the sports field lighting system upgraded to more efficient LED lighting. 

The following works will be carried out from March – June 2023:

• Construction of a new sports amenity building to support sporting groups using the northern playing fields.
• Improvements to the carpark and grounds.

Further facility improvements identified in the master plan are being planned. An update will be provided when the scheduling of further work has been confirmed.

All future stages of work identified in the Master Plan are currently unfunded. The adopted Master Plan will support Council to work with community groups and Government to attract additional funding for other projects identified in the plan.
