Funding

Stage 2

Teven Reserve Parkland stage 2 works commenced April 2024. Council’s contractor are continuing works to create a unique space for environmental restoration, recreation and play. Works include:

  • viewing deck and water access structure for passive watercraft and fishing
  • nature play area
  • picnic shelters
  • nature trails
  • rehabilitiation of Big Scrub vegetation, the wetland and riparian area
  • public facilities and carpark.

A parcel of land at the corner of North Teven and Tintenbar Road at the confluence of Houghlahans Creek and Maguires Creek and was purchased by Council in 2016. The land was purchased with the aim of re-establishing native riparian vegetation, creating a community space for nature-based recreation and to contribute to actions within the Richmond River Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP). Another aim of the project was to add to the environmental benefits of riparian rehabilitation works undertaken by Council and Local Land Services on adjacent blocks of land as well as rehabilitation works undertaken by Tuckombil Landcare at Teven Park on Eltham Road.

The works to be completed at the site aim to enhance both environmental and community amenity values synergistically. These works include bush regeneration, riparian rehabilitation, removal of weeds and bank-side camphor laurel trees and wetland rehabilitation. In addition, the creation of public access facilities including car parking, walking trails, viewing decks, water access for passive watercraft and fishing, as well as public education signage and bird watching vantage points that will provide opportunities for nature appreciation.

Council has been successful in receiving two grants to assist in funding of the project; including a grant from the NSW Department of Planning and Environment’s (DPE) Coastal and Estuary Grants Program to assist with vegetation rehabilitation and fencing and from DPE’s Open Spaces: Places to Swim Grant Program to assist with construction of the boardwalk, parking, viewing platform, wetland rehabilitation and walking trails.

Initial weed removal began in mid-2022, and planting of native Big Scrub species commenced in April 2023. The project aims to be completed by mid-2024 with ongoing maintenance carried out into the future to maintain the rehabilitated vegetation at the site.
