NRCG May 2024 Exhibitions

Our environments and ourselves

Northern Rivers Community Gallery (NRCG) presents four new exhibitions this May that explore engagements with the natural world including our impact on natural ecosystems, the use of discarded materials to create realistic sculptures of everyday objects, how our relationships with ourselves parallel our relationships with our environment and the key role two woman played in botanical and ornithological documentation in the 19th Century.

Gallery Coordinator, Imbi Davidson, said “This May we welcome four new, engaging and thought-provoking exhibitions by four women artists who explore our relationships with the natural world and how this impacts our environments, ourselves and the legacy that this valuable research leaves for future generations.”

Coastal biome | LeAnne Vincent
Coastal biome explores human consumption and development along the East Coast of Australia using multiple cyanotype photograms on fabric drawing imagery from flora, fauna, sand, engineered objects, and digital negatives. Together they function as reminders of our impact on the natural ecosystems and encourage place-responsive habitation.

The Importance of Unassuming Things | Susan Gourley
Drawing upon the still life genre, The Importance of Unassuming Things utilises the humble, versatile, and mimetic qualities of discarded materials to replicate new, used, and disused, small life-size objects found in everyday life. This visual response reflects Susan’s expanding practice into the material, symbolic and metaphoric capacities of rubbish to explore ideas and impacts of consumption and waste.

Earthly Threads | Billie Baker
Earthly Threads explores the idea of reciprocity in the natural world, investigating  the notion that our relationships with self, parallel our relationships with the environment. Across a suite of textile works Baker reproduces patterns in nature through weaving, painting, sewing and photographic processes – organic shapes and lines combining the scientific, topographic, mystical and erotic.

Re-present | Lyndall Phelps
Since 2020 Lyndall Phelps has been investigating nineteenth century Australian botany and ornithology, particularly the role played by women, in an amateur capacity, in the amassing and disseminating of collections. Re-present focuses on two women, Elizabeth Gould and Rowena Birkett, who played an active role in producing the rich illustrations that accompanied early ornithological publications. Re-present, will include textiles, sculpture and works on paper, and will also highlight local bird species that are classified as vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered.

All exhibitions open Wednesday 1 May and continue until Sunday 23 June. The official exhibition launch will be held 5.30 – 7.30pm, Thursday 2 May
