Tanamera Reserve Restoration

Stage 1 2023-2024

Objective	Improve the stormwater conveyance, water quality and sediment load, ecology, environmental restoration and amenity of Tanamera Reserve.

Tanamera Reserve in Alstonville is a grassed reserve with an open stormwater channel passing through the length of the reserve. The channel is also known as Alstonville Creek, a first order stream that flows downstream into Maguires and then Emigrant Creeks and key fish habitat. Alstonville Creek and Tanamera Reserve receive stormwater runoff from the surrounding urban catchment area. The creek is in a degraded state with a defunct concrete invert, minimal riparian vegetation and poor ecological condition.

A rehabilitation plan has been prepared to progressively improve the stormwater facilitation, environmental restoration and amenity of the reserve over a long-term period. This has also been subject to flood analysis to ensure increased hydrological function is achieved. The long-term restoration of the reserve will include:

removal of the concrete invert
bank stabilisation and channel reprofiling
riparian restoration, revegetation and removal of weed species
fish resting pool and wetland area
amenity improvements including a creek crossing and viewing platform/picnic shelter.

Stage 1 works are expected to be completed during 2023/24. This stage includes some revegetation and riparian planting, provision of creek crossing and a viewing platform/picnic shelter. Future stages will be subject to securing additional funding.

This project will ensure positive ongoing environmental outcomes for Tanamera Reserve including bank stabilisation, improved water quality, improved habitat provision in Alstonville and connection of native vegetation corridors.
