Reduce Single Use

Small changes to your everyday activities can provide substantial benefits to the environment and in our community. If you’re heading out to eat, support businesses with a focus on sustainable practices, use reusable items for takeaway food and drink, and where possible eat in to use ceramic cups, foodware and cutlery.

Love Food Hate Waste

We are a partner of Love Food Hate Waste and their associated Food Smart program. With the support of North East Waste, households and businesses can learn how to reduce their food waste through better meal plans, smarter shopping and more effective food storage.

Love Food Hate Waste aims to raise awareness about the environmental, economic and social impacts of food waste in NSW and reduce the amount of good food sent to landfill.

The program is run by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and delivered in partnership with NSW businesses, not-for-profit organisations, local councils and community groups who share a commitment to reducing food waste.

Home Composting and Worm Farming

While Ballina Council has an organics bin collection service for urban residents, we recognise that many residents either don’t have access to the service or are interested in composting their food and garden scraps at home to support their gardens and recycle this valuable resource close to home. Composting and worm farming are both fairly simple and environmentally friendly ways to recycle your household food scraps so long as the designated technique is followed.

Below are some easy guides to get you on your way.
